AMMAN — Her Majesty Queen Rania visited the offices of the Makesy mobile application in Al Abdali Boulevard on Wednesday, which supports local artisans, seamstresses, embroiderers and garment makers, by connecting them to the local and international fashion design industry through e-commerce opportunities.

During the meeting, Her Majesty heard from Makesy founder, Saeed Omar, about the inspiration behind the app, which launched in 2021. The startup aims to reduce people’s reliance on fast fashion and allow clients to customise their orders by proposing designs that are executed by skilled local tailors. Customers can do this by uploading photos and sketches of their proposed design ideas onto the app, after which Makesy tracks and monitors the production process by local artisans and seamstresses, according to a statement from Her Majesty’s office.

The application currently works with over 650 skilled artisans from across the country who are certified in sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, beading, weaving and more. Makesy also ensures that the appropriate artisans are selected to fulfill each order by taking into consideration the order’s budget, the artisan’s skill level and the client’s location.

To date, Makesy works with 115 fashion designers, retailers and entrepreneurs from three continents. Additionally, the startup has managed to secure employment opportunities for 45 women who have been certified by Bayt Al Khayt Academy, an artisanal educational project established in 2010 to support local artisans by building their skills and enhancing their economic conditions. The academy offers diploma programmes in seven different areas including, sewing, design, crocheting, embroidery, macramé and home-based projects, the  statement  said.
