Mexican academic delegation concludes visit to Jordan

AMMAN — A Mexican academic delegation from Colegio de México university (COLMEX) concluded its official visit to Jordan.

During the visit, the delegation held meetings that covered cooperation in several academic, language studies and research fields with a number of Jordanian public and private universities, according to a Mexican embassy statement.

The delegation included President of El Colegio de Mexico Silvia Giorguli and Director of the Centre for Asian and African Studie, Amaury Garcia and three of their students. 

COLMEX’s eight academic centres offer degrees in the following areas: Master’s and PhD degrees in history, sociology, economics, political science, linguistics, literature, Asian and African studies, urban studies, demography and environmental studies. 

The university also offers a master’s programme in gender studies, bachelor’s degrees in international relations, public administration and economics. 

Giorguli said she was pleased to meet with the presidents of Jordanian universities, expressing her interest in cooperating with them in the field of international studies, languages ​​and comparative research in the social, human, historical and cultural sciences.

Garcia said that El Colegio de México is a public institution focusing on teaching and research in the social sciences and humanities. 

For 60 years it has interests in studying the countries of the Middle East, having today one of the few postgraduate programmes of the region in Latin America, Garcia added. 

Mexican Ambassador Roberto Rodriguez Hernandez, who accompanied the academic delegation during its meetings with universities’ presidents, stressed the depth of Jordanian-Mexican relations and their development in all fields, especially in the field of academic cooperation.

Twelve agreements were signed between Jordanian and Mexican universities in the field of scientific research, the exchange of academics and students, in addition to other agreements under review or under process of signing, the statement said.

The Mexican delegation held meetings with the University of Jordan and its Centre for Strategic Studies, Yarmouk University, the University of the Middle East, Al Zaytoonah University and the World Islamic Sciences and Education University.

At the conclusion of COLMEX’s visit, Barakat Awajan, former Minister of Culture, hosted the president of the Jordanian-Mexican Friendship Association, which is under the process of establishment, and some of its members, the ambassador and the Mexican academic delegation.
