Jordan to introduce 5G services soon after detailed studies — TRC chief

AMMAN — Jordan is close to introducing 5G services after years of detailed studies on their impact, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’ (TRC)Chief Commissioner Bassam Sarhan said on Tuesday. 

Speaking during the launch of the “Building Capacities Programme on Fifth Generation Mobile Networks (5G)” workshop, Sarhan said the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) is continuing efforts to complete the necessary procedures to launch the services.

He said that the TRC is “always ready to achieve excellence in specialised knowledge that contributes to the development of the ICT sector, in cooperation with partners in the Kingdom and the Arab world”, according to a TRC statement.

During the two-day workshop, organised by the TRC in cooperation with the International Association of Mobile Operators (GSMA) and with the participation of Arab regulatory commissions and other stakeholders, Sarhan referred to His Majesty King Abdullah’s support to this sector and its benefits for future generations and its role as “a pillar to develop all other sectors”.

He also said that participants will be acquainted with the latest global developments in 5G services, in addition to the expected impact of introducing these services, including facilitating businesses and granting citizens innovative and diversified services.

Director of the Middle East and North Africa at GSMA Jawad Abbasi said that the association is happy to resume offering building capacity programmes in Jordan and the Arab world after two years of stoppage due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also expressed the GSMA’s readiness to further boost cooperation with the TRC and to hold more workshops in the future.
