Dam storage capacity reaches 27.6% after recent rainfall

AMMAN —  The Ministry of Water and Irrigation on Sunday announced a 65.2% increase in the annual rainfall amount, equivalent to 5,343.8 million cubic metres (mcm) of Jordan’s long term annual average of 8.1 billion cubic metres (bcm), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

In the last 24 hours, the total amount of water accumulated in the main dams amounted to 745,000 cubic metres, while the dams' storage on Sunday morning amounted to 77.5 mcm, with the total storage capacity of dams reaching 27.6 per cent.

The ministry indicated that the rain monitoring stations recorded the highest rainfall during the past 24 hours in Rajif in the Maan Governorate, amounting to 17.6 mm. The rest of the governorates recorded average amounts of precipitation in a 24 hour period: Aqaba 11.5 mm, Tafileh 7.8 mm, Maan 8.3 mm, Karak 6.4 mm, Ajloun 1.0 mm and Amman 0.1 mm. 

Precipitation rates in the Kingdom until Sunday morning amounted to 74.4 per cent of the general average in Irbid, 68.5 per cent in Ajloun, 42.1 per cent in Jerash, 42.8 per cent in Mafraq, 78 per cent in Amman, 86 per cent in Salt, 56.2 in Madaba, 51.7 per cent in Karak, 37.5 per cent in Tafileh, 35.8 per cent in Shobak, 61 per cent in Maan, and 183.8 per cent in Aqaba.
