British Council organises workshop on higher education reform

AMMAN — English experts on Wednesday shared the UK’s experience in reforming and developing the higher education system in a workshop organised by the British Council and the Higher Education Ministry.

During the workshop, policymakers discussed the relevance of the British reforms for Jordan’s higher education development. 

The dialogue was organised by the British Council’s “Internationalising Higher Education” programme, which works with the Higher Education Ministry and partners in the UK to develop educational strategies and encourage local and international debates on higher education. 

Held in the presence of Secretary General of the Ministry of Higher Education Ahed Wahadneh and British Council Deputy Director May Abu Hamdia, the workshop was attended by members of the Higher Education Council and the presidents of several Jordanian universities, as well as heads of the boards of trustees and other governmental organisations concerned with the development of education in the Kingdom. 

Abu Hamdia said that the discussion was held “as part of the council’s long-term partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education, which aims to achieve education for prosperity within the framework of the National Strategy for Human Resource Development”.

Governmental policymaking for higher education, governance, university strategy development and the path to international competitiveness were some of the key topics populating the discussion, which was structured to reflect the interplay in the British higher education system. 

The sessions also fostered dialogue on the consequences of the market approach to higher education.
