Heatwave to reach its peak on Monday — JMD

AMMAN – “Normal” summer weather is forecast in hilly areas today, while it will be hot in the rest of the Kingdom due to a slight rise in temperatures that started on Saturday, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD).

As of Monday, another increase in temperatures will see mercury levels rise five to six degrees above their annual average for this time of year, said meteorologist Hussein Momani. 

The heatwave, which will reach its peak on Monday, is caused by a seasonal depression from the north of the Indian subcontinent and a thermal low originating from the Arabian Peninsula, Momani noted. 

He added that temperatures are expected to range between 22-33ºC in Amman, 23-33ºC in northern regions, 20-32ºC in southern regions and 29-39ºC in Aqaba.

“The hot weather will be felt in most parts of the country on Monday but it will not be as extreme as that felt during the hot air mass that affected the Kingdom last week,” he highlighted. 

The JMD continued to warn the public to avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially at peak hours, and not to leave children alone in closed vehicles.

People are also encouraged to drink a lot of liquids, especially water. 

Meanwhile, the Jordan Valley Authority underlined its commitment to continue providing extra water to farmers during the hot season. 

“We are making sure that farmers receive enough water to maintain their crops during the hot spell,” JVA Director General Saad Abu Hammour told The Jordan Times, reiterating the need for farmers to irrigate their crops and trees during the early morning or at night.
