Hashemite Scientific Councils discuss Hanbali school of jurisprudence

AMMAN — Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, Awqaf Minister Wael Arabiyat on Friday inaugurated the 86th Hashemite Scientific Councils session at the Conference Hall in the Islamic cultural centre affiliated with the King Abdullah I Mosque in Amman. 

During the fourth and final session to be held this year, organised by the Awqaf  Ministry, Abdul Nasser Abu Albasal, member of the Jordanian Iftaa Council, discussed the Hanbali madhhab (school of Islamic jurisprudence), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The event saw the attendance of the Kingdom’s Grand Mufti Mohammad Khalaileh, Chief Islamic Justice Abdul Karim Khasawneh, senior army officers and scholars.

Albasal said the four schools of Islamic jurisprudence are “not political parties” and none of their founders wanted to have followers of their own. Rather, they wanted the public to follow “the truth” as the four madhhabs are rules based on ideology that encourages critical thinking and diligence, he said. 

Al Azhar University Sharia (Islamic law) Professor Abdul Aziz Ata said the Hanbali madhhab was unique for various reasons, including its reliance on texts from the companions of Prophet Mohammad and their successors, which made it “more flexible”. 

The final session for the year concluded with queries to the grand mufti.
