AMMAN — An autopsy has not yet been performed to determine the cause of death of a 46-year-old British diving instructor on an Aqaba beach over the Eid holiday, official sources said Monday.

The victim had just finished a diving session at the southern beach of Aqaba last week and “when he reached the beach he collapsed”, a senior Civil Defence Department official told The Jordan Times on Saturday.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

“The prosecutor has not issued an order yet to perform an autopsy on the victim and we will have to wait for his instructions,” Kais Koussous, the head of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, told The Jordan Times.

Police officials have ruled out foul play and said the man’s death was probably accidental.

An official at the British embassy in Amman said on Monday that the “embassy is aware of the death”.

“Our thoughts are with friends and family to whom we are providing consular assistance,” the official told The Jordan Times.
