King discusses cooperation with top US agriculture, energy officials

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday received US Department of Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack.

During a meeting at Al Husseiniya Palace, the King and the US official discussed ways to boost and develop bilateral relations, especially in the agricultural field, a Royal Court statement said.

King Abdullah stressed the importance of exchanging expertise between the two countries in this regard, in a manner that achieves mutual interests. 

The King expressed his appreciation of the assistance the US extends to Jordan, which, he said, helps the Kingdom implement its development programmes. 

He extended his thanks to the US government for presenting a new wheat grant to Jordan of 100,000 tonnes, under a special agreement that was signed on Sunday (see story on page 2).

Vilsack stressed US’ commitment to strengthening its relations with Jordan in various fields, especially in the agricultural sector, commending His Majesty's reform policies, which, he said, are prone to help achieve progress and prosperity for the country. 

Agriculture Minister Akef Zu'bi also met with Vilsack and discussed with him agricultural cooperation.

Also on Sunday, King Abdullah received Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs at the US State Department Amos Hochstein. 

At the meeting, King Abdullah stressed the importance of boosting cooperation between Jordan and the US in the energy sector, in a manner that serves mutual interests.

King Abdullah highlighted Jordan's efforts to confront the energy challenge and diversify its resources through programmes designed to produce alternative and renewable energy as key solution to the difficulties facing the national economy and accelerate growth and development, including the establishment of a nuclear reactor for electricity generation.
