Released convict killed in Southern Shuneh shooting

AMMAN — Authorities on Saturday said they were searching for one or more suspects in connection with the shooting death of a man in Northern Shuneh on Friday.

The 37-year-old victim, who was not identified by officials, was found shot dead in his vehicle, which had hit an electricity pole, a senior official source said.

“The victim was hit by six bullets on different parts of his body, and it seems that his car kept running after his death and ended up hitting an electricity pole,” the official told The Jordan Times.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Ishaq Abu Awad supervised the government autopsy of the victim on Saturday.

A second source told The Jordan Times that the victim was convicted in the past of killing two people, including a well-known tribal leader in the same area in September 2007.

Sami Afash Udwan and Yousef Jariri were gunned down in Karameh in Northern Shuneh, while a third person was critically injured in the shooting on September 30, 2007.

Their assailant, who was gunned down on Friday, turned himself in to police at the time and handed over the automatic weapon he used in the attack to investigators.

Initial investigation into the 2007 incident indicated that revenge was the motive behind the shooting.

The man was released from prison almost a month ago after serving time, the second source told The Jordan Times.

“It is too early to connect yesterday’s shooting with the double murder in 2007 because we still don't have any suspects,” the second source said.

A search is ongoing for possible suspects. The crime lab collected evidence from the scene and is conducting ballistic tests in hopes of finding the perpetrator(s), the source added.
