Suspected thief arrested; alleged accomplice reported dead

AMMAN — Police on Saturday arrested a suspect wanted on several counts of theft, a Public Security Department (PSD) media centre statement said.

The suspect was detained after a police search of his house yielded various stolen items.

The PSD said police officers escorting the suspect out of the house came under fire from a speeding car in “an apparent attempt to free the man”.

The attempt failed, but the vehicle hit a police officer, who is currently recovering in hospital.

An hour later, police received a tip that a “wanted criminal” was hospitalised for a gunshot wound but died of his injury.

The detained suspect confessed during questioning that the deceased was his accomplice in several robberies and was among the car’s occupants who tried to free him, the PSD said, noting that an investigation is under way.
