AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) is expected to start operating several mobile radar units and fixed cameras in the capital by the end of this month, a municipality official said on Monday.

Mohammad Faouri, director of joint management at GAM, said the municipality has already installed 12 new surveillance cameras.

“GAM is going to start operating them by the end of this month,” he told The Jordan Times over the phone.

Faouri noted that GAM is also going to start using mobile radar to record traffic violations.

“These radar units can be used anywhere either in a car or you can fix them on a tripod,” he said.

A GAM statement quoted Faouri as saying that the cameras were set up at intersections and traffic lights, and can take photos of six lanes and at two different angles.

The GAM official noted that the cameras will record various traffic violations such as seat belt use, car licence expiration, speeding, driving in the wrong lane, using mobile phones while driving and crossing red lights.

A media campaign launched in cooperation with the Central Traffic Department aims to raise public awareness of the new surveillance cameras.

Faouri said the new cameras will be used to increase the level of road safety in Amman.
