Over 2,530 cases of running red lights registered this month — PSD

AMMAN – The Traffic Department registered 2,530 instances of motorists ignoring red lights since the beginning of December, according to the Public Security Department (PSD) media office.  

In a statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times on Tuesday, the PSD media office said the Traffic Department launched an intensive campaign across the Kingdom at the beginning of this month to monitor motorists’ compliance with traffic regulations in a bid to reduce traffic jams and safeguard the public. 

Traffic police also issued tickets to 580 motorists for using their private cars as taxis inside and between cities, the statement said, adding that 947 violations were registered against public transport vehicles for not adhering to their routes. 

In addition, 390 public transport vehicles were fined for charging higher fares, while tickets were issued to taxi drivers for not turning on their meters. 

The department also registered hundreds of violations related to street burnout in addition to other breaches that could endanger public safety, the statement said. 

The PSD media office said the crackdown on violations on the Kingdom’s streets will continue, calling on motorists to comply with traffic rules. 

Also on Tuesday, Mohammad Faouri, director of joint management at the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), said GAM has started installing 22 surveillance cameras on some roads and intersections in the capital.

Faouri made the remarks at a meeting to discuss traffic issues in the city, attended by Amman Mayor Aqel Biltaji, Public Security Department Assistant Director for Traffic Affairs Brig. Gen. Atef Saudi and Central Traffic Department (CTD) Director Col. Yaser Harahsheh, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The locations of the new cameras, which include traffic light cameras and fixed and mobile radar cameras, were chosen according to studies carried out by GAM and the CTD based on statistics of accidents and traffic tickets, Faouri explained.

He also noted that installing the cameras aims to enhance road safety by curbing traffic violations such as crossing red lights, speeding and driving in the wrong lanes.
