AMMAN — Border guards have received 530,067 refugees since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) Spokesperson Colonel Mamdoh Al-Ameri said Thursday.

In a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the officer said that the military handled 7,206 injury cases, 7,190 of whom were men, 11 women and five children.

Official figures put the number of registered refugees at more than 600,000, of whom more than 85 per cent live in host communities, while the total number of Syrians stands at more than 1.4 million, constituting around 20 per cent of the population.

Ameri added that JAF will continue its humanitarian role in receiving Syrian refugees through 45 crossing points along the 378-kilometre long border with Syria.

When refugees cross the border, JAF personnel check their personal documents and register their names to send them to relief and refugee agencies, after they are transferred to front-line shelters, where they receive medical care and meals until they are moved to refugee camps, Ameri added.

The spokesperson stressed that no injured people were forced to return to Syria.

In this regard, Ameri said that each country has the right to take any procedure to protect its territory, citizens and residents, noting that people who are suspected to have relations with terrorist organisations are subjected to strict security checks.

Specialised security forces follow similar procedures at airports and other crossing points, according to the officer, who stressed that such a routine is a right for countries as stipulated in local and international laws.
