'Drop in temperatures forecast as depression takes effect'

AMMAN — A slight depression is forecast to start affecting the Kingdom on Sunday, bringing rain and thunderstorms, especially in the northern and central regions.

Moreover, brisk winds are expected to cause dust storms in desert areas, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department.

Temperatures on Sunday are expected to range between 15°C and 26°C in Amman, and between 17°C and 28°C in Aqaba.

On Monday, mercury levels in the capital are forecast to reach a high of 25°C and drop to a low of 14°C, four to five degrees below their annual average.

Last Tuesday marked the first day of autumn, during which the Kingdom starts witnessing cooler weather and unstable conditions that bring the first rains of the season.

During autumn, temperatures gradually start to drop and the country witnesses several Red Sea troughs that cause unstable weather conditions and light rainfall.

The unstable weather conditions during autumn bring less than 1 per cent of the country’s long-term annual average of eight billion cubic metres of rainfall, according to the JMD.

Although temperatures start dropping during autumn, it is not unusual for the country to witness heatwaves.

Average temperatures during September range between 29°C and 30°C. Mercury levels usually start gradually dropping in the days leading up to October, when average day temperatures become around 27°C, according to the JMD.
