AMMAN — A wanted man was killed and his brother was critically wounded on Wednesday during a police raid on a house in Madaba where the two men were hiding, official sources said.
The victims were part of a group of four men wanted by police on charges related to premeditated murder, robbery and aggravated assault, according to a Public Security Department (PSD) statement.
“Police received a tip that the four men were hiding in a house in Madaba and decided to raid the house,” PSD Spokesperson Maj. Amer Sartawi said.
“The force was met with fierce resistance by the two brothers who fired at our officers and we had to fire back,” he told The Jordan Times.
Two of the four suspects were injured in the shootout, according to the PSD statement.
“They were rushed to a nearby hospital where one of them was declared dead on arrival and the second man was listed in critical condition,” the statement added.
A second source told The Jordan Times that the injured man was later transferred to Al Bashir Hospital in Amman.
No one else was injured in the shootout, according to Sartawi.
The deceased had 12 criminal records for premeditated murder, robbery and aggravated assault, while his injured brother had seven criminal records on similar charges, he said.
The two other suspects, who were arrested in the raid, are wanted on minor offences, Sartawi added.
Police found two automatic weapons, a pistol and 10 ammunition clips, according to the PSD statement.
Sartawi said police are investigating the incident.
