AMMAN — The United Nations is expected to honour four Jordanian peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty, among a group of fallen officers, at a commemoration ceremony at UN Headquarters on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers to be held Thursday, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Jordanian peacekeepers to be honoured with the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal are: Sgt. Ali Jumaa Al Jawabra and Sgt. Mahmoud Jamil Al Sayyida, who served with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), and Abdelwahab Nafa, who served in a civilian capacity in the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and Omar Al Khatib, who served in a civilian capacity in United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres will lay a wreath in honour of over 4,200 United Nations peacekeepers who have lost their lives since 1948.

Guterres will also honour 103 military, police and civilian peacekeepers who have lost their lives while serving under the United Nations flag last year with the Dag Hammarskjöld medal posthumously.

The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in 2002 to pay tribute to all men and women serving in peacekeeping and to honour the memory of those who lost their lives in the cause of peace.
