AMMAN — The Ministry of Social Development on Tuesday reviewed alternatives to shelters for persons with disabilities in partnership with the Higher Council for Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The ministry examined the programmes, activities, projects and initiatives funded by donors to implement the national strategic plan to find alternatives to shelters for persons with disabilities during 2019-2022, within the framework of joint coordination between the ministry and the council.

The national strategic plan comes to ensure temporary and permanent solutions and alternatives to governmental and private shelters, and to transform non-governmental accommodation agencies into inclusive day service agencies.

HH Prince Mired, president of the council, stressed the importance of the partnership between the council and the ministry to provide better services and alternatives to the accommodation system for persons with disabilities in Jordan.

For his part, the Ministry’s Secretary General Barq Dmour affirmed the ministry's keenness to continue coordination and cooperation with the council as a strategic partner, especially in implementing the shelter alternatives strategy, in addition to the programmes that the ministry is working on pertaining to the rights of persons with disabilities.

Dmour added that the ministry followed a plan to change its philosophy from the concept of institutional care to family care or alternative family care, based on Article 72/c of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Law 20/2017.
