AMMAN — The authorities on Saturday said that they  were still searching for the body of a woman who was allegedly murdered and dumped in a dumpster in the capital by a man last week, official sources said.

The victim was allegedly murdered by a man who told investigators on September 19 that “he murdered a woman and dumped her body in a garbage dumpster following an argument”.

“A specialised law-enforcement team tasked with locating the victim’s body inspected the dumpster that the suspect allegedly said he discarded the body in, but came up empty-handed,” a senior official source said.

Law-enforcement officials also examined garbage dumpster areas and garbage vehicles looking for the body “but so far we have been unable to find anything”, the senior official source told The Jordan Times.

The source added that in his initial confession to the authorities “the suspect claimed he strangled the woman following an argument over her refusal to marry him and choosing to continue her education”.

“We are still investigating the suspect’s claims and questioning the woman’s family who reported her missing on September 19 to learn more about the circumstances that led to her alleged murder by the suspect,” the senior official said.

The Criminal Court prosecutor levelled premeditated charges against the suspect and ordered his detention at a correctional and rehabilitation centre for 15 days pending further investigation, the senior official source added.

Last week, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said that law-enforcement agencies received information that a woman was murdered in the capital.

“Our law-enforcement agencies conducted a joint investigation that led them to a suspect,” Sartawi said.

Upon questioning the suspect, the police official told The Jordan Times, that the suspect “confessed to killing the woman over a dispute”.

Sartawi did not elaborate on the places investigators plan to search for the woman’s body.
