AMMAN — Secretary General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs Abdullah Kanaan on Saturday called on the Arab and Islamic media and all interested people to keep Jerusalem and Palestine as a top issue, especially given its central cause for Muslims and Arabs.

In a statement on the occasion of Al Quds Global Week, Kanaan said that the Arab and Islamic nations agree that the Palestinian cause is the “central cause for every free Arab and Muslim person, out of the sheer belief that the Arab right in Palestine enjoys historical, religious and legitimate grounds”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Based on the Jerusalem’s centrality, Muslims scholars representing various international Islamic institutions and commissions, particularly the International Union of Muslim Scholars, launched Al Quds Global Week last year, which is annually celebrated in the last week of the Rajab month of the lunar calendar.

Launching the initiative coincides with the anniversary of the liberation of Al Aqsa Mosque by Salahuddine Al Ayyoubi in Rajab, 583 Hijri, corresponding to Gregorian calendar year of 1187, and to celebrate Al Isra wal Miraj that also falls in Rajab, the secretary general noted.

He added that the week includes several events, such as sermons and marches that reject the Israeli occupation and symposiums and lectures to raise awareness, among other activities that aim to unify efforts to support the Palestinian cause.

Kanaan noted that the committee stresses that the week has several humanitarian messages, mainly to remind the world of the suffering of Palestinian people and their just cause that the UN and its agencies supports through issuing hundreds of resolutions, calling on Israel to stop its occupation policies and engage in endeavours to reach the two-state solution.

He also stressed that Jordan’s people and leadership, as the Hashemite Custodian over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, will continue to exert all efforts and offer all services to Palestinians, and will continue to highlight this cause in all international events with a diplomatic efficiency.

Kanaan noted that the Kingdom’s message on this occasion is that it will continue its support to Palestine and Jerusalem regardless of the cost and sacrifices.
