Probe launched into death of man following receiving AstraZeneca COVID vaccine 2nd dose

AMMAN — The Media, Public Relations and Radio Unit at the University of Jordan announced the details of the death of a 66-year-old citizen at the University of Jordan vaccination centre/sports hall, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

A statement issued by the university said that the man took a rest for 10 minutes after receiving the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, at exactly 9:30am, according to the health protocol in force inside the centre, then left the hall and took a seat outside. 

The statement indicated that 10 minutes after leaving the waiting room, while still seated, the man fell unconscious. 

The medical staff at the centre rushed to help and all medical measures were taken, including carrying out advanced cardiac resuscitation. 

Within minutes, the Civil Defence transferred the man to the university’s hospital, accompanied by the medical staff from the vaccination centre.

At the hospital, appropriate medical measures were taken again but the man passed away, the statement added, stressing that the body was transferred to the forensics department to determine the cause of death. 

Minister of Health  Feras Al Hawari said that the cause of the death is under investigation. 

He added that the man suffered from chronic diseases and had previously received the first dose of the same vaccine without recording any significant complications. Hawari pointed out that the effects accompanying the AstraZeneca vaccine, including blood clots, do not usually occur immediately after vaccination, but rather at least five days after receiving it. 

The man received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on April 4 and received the second dose 12 weeks after the first one.
