Online lecture sheds light on economic rights of women

AMMAN — Women politicians and activists in an Internet lecture praised the government’s efforts in handling the COVID-19 crisis, but said the procedures included ‘some gaps’ that affected the economic rights of women.

The lecture, organised by Solidarity Is Global Institute (SIGI) on the organisation’s Facebook page and titled “The Political Parties during the COVID-19 crisis, a Women’s Vision”, is part of SIGI’s Eye Project, which is funded by the EU under the framework of the Jordanian Democratic Institutions Development (EU-JDID) programme in partnership with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), which aims to strengthen women’s political participation.

AECID General Coordinator in Jordan Vicente Ortega said that it is important to support the work of local NGOs during the crisis.

He also pointed out that many opportunities will “occur following the end of the COVID-19 crisis, and hopefully our humanity will become better and we will support the civil society to enhance democracy and gender equality in Jordan”.

Meanwhile, Former MP Rula Hroub, who is the president of Stronger Jordan political party, praised the government’s handling of COVID-19 crisis, but said there were gaps left in the process that affected women the most.

“Women were victims twice because of the COVID-19 crisis because many will be unable to return to work since daycare centres and schools were not allowed to open and they will most probably lose their jobs as a result,” Hroub said.
