AMMAN - A local organisation launched the “Brave and Responsible Women Field Leaders" initiative to highlight the effective and courageous role of the field leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

Solidarity Is Global Institute (SIGI) launched the initiative via zoom application and published it on the organisation’s Facebook page.

“We will interview many community leaders in various governorates, and the aim is to interview 20 individuals who are serving their communities,” SIGI Executive Director Asma Khader said.

Khader told The Jordan Times that “three individuals have been interviewed so far and they expressed high gratitude “because they realised that we did not forget them and that we appreciate what they are doing”.

The project is funded by the EU under the framework of the Jordanian Democratic Institutions Development (EU-JDID) programme in partnership with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

AECID General Coordinator in Jordan Vicente Ortega said during the meeting that it is important to support the work of local NGOs, including SIGI, during this crisis.

"We are always eager to support women on both fronts: ones who are working on the front lines during the crisis and others who are involved in the political and social spheres,” Ortega said.

He added that considering the government, community and other entities responses to the crisis, “we must focus on women and human rights and to obtain the information from its reliable and official sources”.

“We will make sure to be part of the support for the civil society, and in finding solutions to deal with the crisis in a positive manner and to also support women’s participation in dealing with this crisis in specific and female’s political and social empowerment in general,” Ortega added.

One of the first lectures, which will take part three times a week, hosted reporter Hanan Kafaween, who is a reporter and activist SIGI coordinator in Aqaba, who highlight the important role of women in the governorate during the COVID-19 crisis.

“I was in direct contact with dozens of women in Aqaba who needed legal, social and other forms of support during the COVID-19 crisis,” Kafaween said.

She added that “women’s role during the crisis, though not visible, contributed in the zeros numbers of COVID-19 in the Kingdom”.

Kafaween added that her future goal is to establish a political party and to run for the Parliament’s elections, because “I can make real change for women and my society when I am under the Dome”.
