AMMAN — First Deputy Speaker of the Lower House Ahmad Khalaileh called on Mediterranean parliaments to exert pressure on their respective governments to take decisive decisions regarding recurrent Israeli crimes and attacks in occupied Palestinian territories.

Participating in the Rabat-hosted 17th Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, Khalaileh stressed the need to move forward with the peace process and resume negotiations that result in reaching an end to the conflict based on the two-state solution, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He added that Jordanians, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, will continue to defend the Palestinian people until they realise their right to establish their independent state on their national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital, stressing the role of the Hashemite Custodianship in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

The lawmaker said the issues of migration, security and terrorism, organised crime, human trafficking, geopolitical and security developments in the region are “a difficult reality”, stressing the need to overcome these challenges through “an accurate diagnosis of the nature of these issues, identifying their root causes, with the aid of a deeper and more comprehensive redefinition”.

Regarding the fight against extremism and terrorism, Khalaileh stressed that Jordan has been at the forefront of countries fighting extremism and terrorism. Despite its location in the middle of a region surrounded by tension and instability, the Kingdom remained “a model” of a secure and stable country.
