AMMAN — A taxi driver in Irbid was found carrying passengers in the trunk of the cab on Monday, according to the police.
Amen FM, the official radio station of the Public Security Department, posted a photo of the taxi with a passenger sitting in the trunk on its Facebook page.
The radio station quoted its correspondent in Irbid Maj. Mohammad Sharif as saying that when the driver was caught shortly before iftar — the meal to break the Ramadan fast after sunset — he was carrying a passenger in the front seat, four in the back seat and two in the trunk.
Police seized the taxi, Amen FM said, but did not mention whether the driver was fined.
Facebook users were amused by the incident, which attracted dozens of comments.
Ameer Samhan said it was the passengers’ mistake to accept being carried in the trunk.
“I find it hard [to believe] that the passengers agreed to sit in the trunk,” Samhan said.
Ramzi Qasrawi wrote that the cab driver was acting out of greed.
Salsabeel Al Azeh said maybe the passenger who agreed to sit in the trunk was in a rush to arrive home before iftar, and the taxi was the only transportation means he found.
Ali Mahasneh said he almost had a similar situation recently.
“I jumped into a coaster bus that is supposed to carry 20 passengers only. When I counted the passengers, the bus was carrying 39 people,” Mahasneh said, adding that the public transportation system is “really bad in Jordan”.
Amen FM (89.5 FM) usually reports odd incidents that happen across the Kingdom.
On Sunday, the radio station reported that a 17-year-old boy was found driving a large truck on the desert highway which links southern governorates with Amman.
