Consumer Price Index up by 3.36% in first 5 months of 2023

AMMAN — The Consumer Price Index, a measure of inflation, went up to 108.5 points in the first five months of 2023 compared with 104.97 in the same period of 2022, an increase of 3.36 per cent, the Department of Statistics (DoS) announced on Sunday. In its monthly bulletin, the DoS noted that the rent sub-group was responsible for 5.17 per cent of the index increase, with fuel and electricity contributing 18.4 per cent, transport 3.14 per cent, yoghurt and eggs 8.59 per cent and healthcare 6.5 per cent, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. In May, DoS figures showed that inflation increased 1.96 points to reach 108.62 points, compared with 106.53 points recorded in the same month of 2022. The department noted that the culture and entertainment sub-group was responsible for 9.27 per cent of the May 2023 increase, with yoghurt and eggs contributing 7.56 per cent, health 6.18 per cent, rent 5.17 per cent and transport 2.45 per cent.
