AMMAN – The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday said that a total of 46 lists representing 246 nominees registered in the second day of candidacy registration for the September 20 parliamentary polls.
The overall number of lists registered on Tuesday and Wednesday reached 193 involving 1,028 would-be candidates, according to IEC figures made available to The Jordan Times.
The IEC started receiving applications from candidates on Tuesday and will continue until the end of working hours on Thursday.
Nearly 23 per cent of the candidates are women, according to the electoral commission, which said that a total of 198 women were on the lists that filed application in the first two days of registration, while the number of men was 830.
Candidates can only run for election through tickets, as running individually is not permitted, according to the 2015 Elections Law.
On Wednesday, the IEC board of commissioners decided to terminate the services of a head of an electoral committee in Irbid's 3rd District for allowing non authorised people to enter a centre that receives applications.
The violation was reported by the Civil Coalition for Monitoring Elections and the Performance of Elected Councils (Rased), said the IEC, which took the decision after investigating the incident.
