AMMAN — The Kingdom imported 405,550 barrels of Iraqi oil in October, an average of 13,000 per day, Energy Minister Saleh Kharabsheh said on Tuesday. The minister noted that around three million oil barrels have been imported from Iraq since September 1, 2021.
A fleet of 11,565 tankers transported this oil from Kirkuk to the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company in Zarqa, according to a ministry statement. The import of Iraqi crude oil is governed by a memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in early September 2021.
Under this agreement, Jordan pledged to buy Kirkuk oil to meet part of its annual crude oil needs. The cost per barrel is based on the average monthly price of Brent oil, with an additional charge of $16 per barrel to cover quality and transport fees.
Under the memo, Jordan is committed to providing special tankers for the transfer of Iraqi oil from Kirkuk to the refinery in Zarqa. The memo also stipulates that the number of tankers is to be split between Jordanian and Iraqi companies.
