‘US announces $65m assistance to Jordan’

AMMAN — The US on Tuesday announced it will provide nearly $65 million (JD46.1 million) in humanitarian assistance to Jordan to help those affected by the Syria crisis.

The funding will provide cash assistance to meet basic needs, maternal and child healthcare, and water and sanitation improvement to benefit Syrians and Jordanians alike, the US embassy in Amman said in a statement.

“While US funding will continue to support refugees living in camps, it also supports non-camp refugees seeking to ensure all refugees are registered,” the statement said.

The funding is Jordan’s share of $439 million (around JD311.5 million) in humanitarian assistance announced by US Secretary of State John Kerry, the embassy said, noting that the US has provided nearly $5.6 billion (JD3.97 billion) in humanitarian assistance since the start of the crisis.

“The Syrian conflict remains the largest and most complex humanitarian emergency of our time, with more than two-thirds of Syria’s pre-war population — over 18 million people — in need of humanitarian assistance both inside Syria and the region,” the embassy said.
