AMMAN — A local initiative managed to provide 500 vulnerable households with gas to warm up their houses during the last cold wave.

“Let’s make their winter warmer” is one of Dar Al Hussam Youth Centre’s initiatives. The initiative was launched in 2021 by young volunteer Hussam Khasawneh.

“Dar Al Hussam”  is a non-profit organisation, located in the Zarqa governorate and founded by Khasawneh. Over 75 volunteers help with collecting, packaging and distributing aid.

“We aim to provide the most vulnerable households in the Zarqa Governorate with any possible aid, during this ‘freezing’ winter the Kingdom is witnessing,” Khasawneh told The Jordan Times.

Families that consist of elderly people or children are particularly vulnerable during the winter months, when a lack of heating can cause severe problems and even the risk of death, according to Khasawneh.

Khasawneh added that until now, the initiative has managed to provide families with gas, blankets and warm winter clothes.

“In three days, we managed to collect funds in order to distribute gas to 500 households, each household got 20 litres of gas,” Khasawneh added.

Corporations, individuals and families donated in order to make these cold days less harsh for children and their families, according to Khasawneh.

“I have received hundreds of phone calls during the past couple of days, people are looking for any means to provide their children with warmth,” Khasawneh added.

Khasawneh noted that many people are “struggling financially”. Thousands of family providers have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and can’t afford to keep their young ones warm, he noted.

“Everyone should have a sense of social responsibility towards vulnerable people, especially during cold winter days,” Khasawneh added.
