Italian delegation visits archaeological sites in Madaba

AMMAN — An Italian delegation specialised in archaeology visited Madaba to provide consultations and designs for the development of the Mukawir site and the preservation of mosaics in the governorate’s various archaeological sites, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

Head of the Jordanian-Italian Cooperation Shermine Dajani said that the delegation is visiting Jordan at the invitation of the Jordan Tourism Board to submit designs in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and the Department of Antiquities to restore and preserve mosaics in Madaba.

On Saturday, the delegation visited the Baptism site and Mukawir in order to prepare to receive pilgrims and tourists in 2030, the millennium anniversary of the beheading of John the Baptist in Mukawir.

The delegation’s visit on Sunday included the Madaba Visitors Centre, the archaeological park, a number of churches, the Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration, and the site of Mount Nebo.

Madaba Mayor Aref Rawajeeh expressed his pride in the close relations between Jordan and Italy, noting that the municipality is in the process of signing a twinning agreement with the Italian city of Ravenna.
