AMMAN — The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on Tuesday inaugurated several military company commands on Jordan’s northeastern border with Syria, according to an EU statement sent to The Jordan Times.
The commands, built with funds provided by the EU, were inaugurated by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lt. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat, EU Ambassador to Jordan Andrea Fontana and IOM Chief of Mission Enrico Ponziani.
The project was launched in May 2017 to support the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) in facilitating humanitarian responses at the borders, the statement added. The commands will be used as accommodations and offices meant to improve the living conditions of personnel stationed at the border.
Special accommodations for female staff were also installed at the service area operated by the UN near Rukban.
The project was carried out within the framework of the Humanitarian Border Management programme, implemented by the IOM, according to the statement, which added that the partnership with the JAF has been ongoing since the beginning of the Syrian crisis.
