Infiltrators and smugglers arrested at border, airport

AMMAN – Border Guards on Monday foiled an infiltration attempt by 12 persons from foreign countries who sought to cross from Jordan into a neighbouring country, an official source at the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army said on Tuesday.

The troops executed rules of engagement followed in such cases, arrested the 12 suspects and referred them to the concerned authorities.

Also on Tuesday, the army said it received 301 Syrian refugees during the previous 24 hours. Border Guards transferred the refugees to shelters and camps and Royal Medical Services cadres treated the injured.

Meanwhile, the Airports Security and Protection Directorate cooperating with anti-narcotics division at the Queen Alia International Airport arrested a foreign person who attempted to smuggle 0.5 kg of cocaine through the airport,  a source quoted by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, said, adding that the suspect was referred to the concerned authorities.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has recently released a report indicating that Jordan remains a corridor — rather than a destination — for drug trafficking.

Commenting on the report, outgoing Interior Minister Salameh Hammad said regional developments and the state of chaos inside the borders of neighbouring countries, in addition to the influx of refugees into Jordan, all led to a 25 per cent increase this year in the Kingdom’s efforts to combat drugs compared to 2015.

During the past months, border surveillance troops have detected , arrested or killed a number of infiltrators, mostly narcotics smugglers and suspected terrorists.

The military has repeatedly stressed that it would deal with any attempts to cross the border, in any direction, and counter schemes to harm Jordan and Jordanians with the necessary force.
