Association of Mediterranean energy regulators meet in Amman

AMMAN — The General Assembly of the Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators (MEDREG) held its 17th meeting in Amman on Wednesday, discussing a set of issues that will shape its future activities within the Mediterranean region.

During the meeting, which was hosted by the Energy and Mineral Regulatory Commission (EMRC), MEDREG representatives and other stakeholders discussed the association’s strategy for 2020-30, which is being developed to define the role that regulators can play in the establishment of an EU-Southern Mediterranean energy community.

Michel Thiollière, president of MEDREG, and commissioner of the French Regulatory Commission for Energy, inaugurated the meeting with EMRC Chairman Farouk Hiyari, according to an EU statement.

MEDREG, which brings together energy regulators of 21 countries around the Mediterranean, plans to hold a Mediterranean forum on energy regulation in Barcelona on November 26 as an institutional tool for dialogue with public and private organisations dealing with the Mediterranean energy sector.

“MEDREG is a relevant tool to better understand regulatory processes and improve the transparency and harmonisation of the Mediterranean markets,” the statement quoted Hiyari as saying.

EU Ambassador to Jordan Joanna Wronecka said “energy market integration is key to face the increasing energy demand, and to do so there is a clear need to use alternative energy sources and renewables in particular.”

“The EU foresees MEDREG as a chance of mutual and sustainable harmonised development of regulatory and legal frameworks in all partner countries,” the statement quoted her as saying.
