AMMAN — Jordan's Permanent Representative to the Arab League Amjad Adaileh on Tuesday participated in an event marking the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, organised by the League's General Secretariat.
During the ceremony attended by Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al Maliki, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the permanent delegates of the Arab countries, Adaileh stressed the need to support and intensify efforts exerted to achieve peace, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
He also highlighted the necessity of resolving the current political stalemate in order to reach real and rapid progress towards the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestine state, with Jerusalem as its capital, on the lines of June 4, 1967, in accordance with the international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, Jordan places the Palestinian cause at the top of diplomatic and political priorities, believing in the centrality of this cause and the right of Palestinians to obtain all their rights, foremost of which is their right to self-determination.
Adaileh referred to Jordan's efforts to safeguard Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and preserve the city’s Arab identity, under the guidance and direct follow-up of His Majesty King Abdullah.
Quoting His Majesty, Adaileh said that undermining the existing historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem will aggravate the situation, causing more violence and extremism.
In line with the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, Jordan will remain, in coordination with the Palestinian National Authority, committed to preserving the existing historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem.
Adaileh highlighted the suffering of Palestinian refugees, calling for supporting the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
Jordan continues, along with all Arab countries, partners and international organisations to ensure that UNRWA continues to provide its services in accordance with its UN mandate, until reaching a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, which preserves the rights of the Palestinians, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, foremost of which is Resolution 194, guaranteeing the right of Palestinian refugees to return and compensation.
