Disillusionment with politics

Overall, so much in our lives has improved: In science, communication, education, health, social services, etc.

In these and other sectors, there is so much that is altruistic, that is human, and that is otherly.

In some sectors, however, there is so much that is highly problematic and disappointing, or way below our expectations.

Politics is one of those sectors.

And we are speaking here at the global, not just the national or regional, level.

Politics, epitomised almost exclusively in the acts and egos of politicians, is largely self-catering and self-serving.

In essence, politics and politicians are supposed to be contributing to the public good, faithfully and meticulously catering to the needs of the larger constituencies: "Of the people, by the people, for the people".

This is not the case anymore.

In fact, while it may have never been the case in human history, things seem to be getting worse, instead of developing nor improving.

There is, in fact, so much disappointment with politicians, appointed or elected, nowadays worldwide in democracies as well as in dictatorships.

To be sure, not all politicians are the same, and some are more sincere and more able than others.

Overall, however, the picture is disappointing.

The story of politics and politicians has been largely one of disillusionment by the people, and therefore failure.

It is all about getting appointed or elected, and then reappointed or reelected, and not about fulfilling promises made and plans proposed.

It is about politicians' interests, and those of their narrow sponsors, patrons, or buddies, and not about the nation or the people.

Time for drastic change: a reshuffle, a revolution in thought, in system, and in mechanisms, and at so many other levels.

As we enter the so-called 4th Industrial Revolution, a whole brave new world is dawning upon us.

A revolution in politics is so much needed, one that prioritises outcomes for the end-users or clients, and not privileges for the messengers, envoys and providers.

Politics has hit a dead end, and new venues and horizons need to be opened or explored.
