Ministry sees 28% rise in consumer complaints, online shopping issues surge

AMMAN — Consumer complaints to the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply have rised by 28% in the first ten months of 2024, reaching 869 cases, up from 679 during the same period last year, according to ministry data.

The ministry said that complaints related to online shopping accounted for a notable portion of the increase, with 169 cases filed since January, making up 19% of the total complaints. This shows a small rise from the 139 online shopping complaints (20% of the total) recorded in the same period in 2023, highlighting the growing challenges of e-commerce for Jordanian consumers, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Of the total complaints filed this year, 679 were resolved, representing an 89% closure rate. This is in line with last year’s rate of 90%, with 613 complaints addressed by October 2023.

The ministry has also issued 66 consumer-related warnings over the ten months, a significant rise from the 44 warnings issued in the same period last year.

Recorded violations have likewise increased, with 33 cases documented, up from 19 in 2023, reflecting heightened efforts to monitor and enforce consumer protection.
