AMMAN — A Senate delegation, led by Khaled Bakkar, chairman of the Administrative Committee, on Monday met with their counterparts from the French delegation on the sidelines of their participation in the 148th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, Switzerland. The Jordanian delegation was led by Khaled Bakkar, chairman of the Administrative Committee.

The two sides exchanged views on the ongoing events in the Gaza Strip and their impact on the Kingdom and the region, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Bakkar highlighted the ongoing communication between King Abdullah of Jordan and French President Emmanuel Macron, aimed at halting the Israeli war on Gaza and providing aid to the besieged strip.

Bakkar also condemned the aggressive actions of Israel in Gaza, labelling the killing of civilians and children as genocide. He also called for Israeli leaders to be held accountable for their actions as war criminals.

In response to a question from the French delegation regarding the water-for-electricity agreement, Bakkar noted that discussing such matters amidst the atrocities committed by Israel was inconceivable. Bakkar also emphasised that the Jordanians firmly reject this issue. He also pointed out that agreements signed with Israel are considered null due to Israel's failure to comply with international conventions and decisions.

Bakkar also highlighted Jordan’s efforts in hosting refugees, despite the heavy burden it places on the Kingdom’s infrastructure, adding that Jordan is shouldering a heavy responsibility in combating extremism and terrorism, particularly in preventing the smuggling of weapons and drugs across its northern front.

The French Senate members acknowledged Jordan’s crucial role in the region and emphasized the importance of extending appropriate support to the Kingdom.

Members of the French Senate stressed the importance of providing appropriate support to Jordan for its pivotal role in the region.
