AMMAN — A Jordanian-Israeli meeting has resulted in an agreement to add 1,150 Jordanian workers to the 3,200 Jordanians currently working in the Red Sea port city of Eilat.

According to an Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) statement on Wednesday, the agreement was reached during an expert-level meeting of the Jordanian-Israeli Higher Coordination Committee in Aqaba.

The two sides also discussed the status of Jordanian workers in Eilat, as well as other issues concerning cooperation in agriculture, fishery and biotechnology.

The committee, headed by ASEZA, also discussed a proposal to launch direct flights that would boost tourism to Aqaba and facilitate the entry of global tourist groups into Jordan via Eilat airport.

The Jordanian team also stressed the status of the management of common coastal areas to support the sustainability of coastal depth, ensure the preservation of the marine environment in the Gulf of Aqaba and its beaches, guarantee coordination and prevent the dumping of waste into the Red Sea.

With regards to the conservation of the environment in Aqaba, the two sides discussed several issues to preserve the ecological balance and durability of observatories of endemic and harmless migratory birds by combating harmful birds, such as the Indian raven, which comes from East Asia on ships and disturbs biodiversity in the area.
