AMMAN — The National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Jordanian Engineers Association, organised an advanced training course titled "Permaculture ".
The five-day course, which targeted 15 newly graduated agronomists focused on permaculture techniques and their impact on the agricultural sector.
The course comes as part of the centre’s efforts to enhance the capabilities of agricultural engineers and bridge the gap between knowledge and the job market, a statement from NARC said.
NARC Director-General Nizar Haddad said the Economic Growth Stimulus Plan is of great interest to His Majesty King Abdullah, and aims to improve the economic situation in the Kingdom and enhance the agricultural sector.
He stressed that achieving food security requires investment in modern, organic and perennial agriculture, as well as improving water use efficiency with a focus on smart water harvesting, optimal utilisation of natural resources and transitioning to the use of organic, instead of chemical, fertilisers.
Saja Aliwa, the spokesperson for the ICRC in Jordan, explained that this course was part of a series of training courses aimed at enhancing the capabilities of newly graduated agricultural engineers, Agricultural Extension employees and Jordanian and Syrian farmers.
The main objectives of the training were to provide comprehensive knowledge and develop practical skills in the principles, techniques and design of permaculture, enabling participants to continuously apply these renewable techniques in various contexts, including home gardens and farms.
The president of the Agricultural Engineers Association, Ali Abu Nuqta, praised the role of NARC in developing scientific research and building the capacities of agricultural engineers.
