Environment Ministry opens electronic, electrical waste disposal sites

AMMAN — The Ministry of Environment, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on Tuesday, opened electronic and electrical waste disposal sites as part of the elimination of persistent organic pollutants (POPS) project's sound management of electrical, electronic and healthcare waste. 

Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the opening of the collection sites is part of the ministry's activities for the Environment and Climate Week, implemented in cooperation with a number of embassies, international organisations and local bodies, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

Jordan produces some 55,000 tonnes of electrical and electronic waste, which is dangerous to human health and the environment. 

A total of nine sites have been developed and equipped for electronic and electrical waste collection, namely: Shuohada Amman Park in Abdoun, Princess Rahma Park in Um Alsumaq, Istiqlal, King Abdullah Park and Tariq Bin Zeyad Park in Irbid, the Hashemite Hall and Sharif Hussein Park in Zarqa. 

Containers have also been dedicated in Aqaba's Petra and Arish streets, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.
