PM directs probe into building collapse

AMMAN — Public Security Directorate (PSD) media spokesperson said that the death toll from the building collapse in Amman’s Jabal Luweibdeh neighbourhood has reached five as rescue teams pulled out three more bodies from the rubble.

The death toll remained the same as of press time on Tuesday night.

The spokesperson revealed that seven injured have been taken from the site, adding that the search for other victims remains ongoing. According to hospital directors, the number of injured has reached 14.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Bisher Al Khasawneh on Tuesday directed authorities to conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse of a residential building in the Jabal Luweibdeh neighbourhood in Amman, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Arriving at the site of the accident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, Khasawneh instructed specialised teams to exert maximum efforts until evacuation and rescue operations conclude.

Civil defence teams and specialised forces are currently running rescue and evacuation operations supervised by the prime minister.

The PSD called on the public to cooperate with security forces, abide by instructions and avoid gathering. 

The directorate also confirmed that it is the only authority dealing with victims on site, announcing their numbers without any delay. 

Prince Hamza Hospital Director Kifah Abu Tarboush said that a 13-year old was hospitalised, adding that the child is in good condition, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
