AMMAN — The Criminal Court last week sentenced a man to death after convicting him of murdering his divorced wife with scissors while at the Sharia Court in Rusiefeh in March 2021.
The court declared the defendant guilty of the premeditated murder of his wife on March 9 and handed him the maximum punishment.
Court papers said the couple was divorced for five years and the victim filed for alimony and custody rights at the Sharia Court.
The defendant decided to murder his wife as a result and began monitoring his wife’s movements almost three months before the incident, court transcripts added.
On the day of the incident, court transcripts maintained, “the defendant learnt from his children that his wife had a court hearing at the Sharia Court”.
“The defendant smuggled scissors to the court and the minute he saw his wife, he stabbed her in the heart and other parts of her body in front of her 13-year-old son and people who were at the court,” the court transcripts stated.
The victim was rushed to Prince Faisal Hospital where she underwent surgery but succumbed to her injuries, court documents added.
Criminal Court Prosecutor Ishaq Abu Awad asked the court to inflict the highest punishment against the defendant.
The tribunal comprised justices Adeeb Khawaldeh, Ramzi Nawayseh and Thiab Tarawneh.
The verdict will automatically be reviewed by the Court of Cassation within the next 30 days.
