AMMAN — The Ministry of Water/Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) and BORDA Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to design and construct a wastewater treatment plant in the Azraq region at a total value of JD3.63 million.

The project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), according to a Water Ministry statement.

Water Minister Mohammad Najjar said that the memo is part of the ministry’s efforts to protect Azraq oasis’ groundwater and environment, as well as to find solutions for treated water reuse and introduce sanitation services.

WAJ Secretary General Bashar Batayneh, who signed the agreement with Abdurasul Kayumov, BORDA regional director, said that the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Azraq will provide additional amounts of treated water, noting that the plant receives tanks with a capacity of 250 cubic metres a day at the first stage to reach 1,450 cubic metres a day to serve 20,000 people.

The treated water will be reused in agriculture, he noted, highlighting the importance of the project in creating jobs for local residents.

Kayumov said that the gap between water resources demand and supply pushes funding organisations to work intensively with relative authorities towards supporting new projects to improve water services.

Established in 1977 in Germany, BORDA West and Central Asia is a non-for-profit international organisation that supports development projects, notably those related to improving water and sanitation services in developing countries.
