Bread demand stays steady despite cold weather

AMMAN — Demand for bread did not increase during the last couple of days with colder temperatures, according to Bakery Owners Association President Abdullah Hamawi.

During a phone interview, Hamawi told The Jordan Times that “bakeries operated all day and at full capacity across the Kingdom’s governorates,” but people did not stock up on bread during the cold weather depression that brought rain and snow in some areas.

Salam Mahmoud, a Jordanian mother, said on Monday: “I only bought what I needed from the bakery and supermarket. I went to the bakery last Thursday and there were no long queues”. 

She added that there were no anxious shoppers on the streets and that she does not know anyone who has stored large quantities of bread or other baked goods. 

Abu Islam, an employee at a bakery based in Sweifieh, told The Jordan Times that when temperatures drop, people deal with the cold in different ways. Some go to bakeries and supermarkets, while others make sure to have their heating systems serviced.

“In general, there was not a significant increase in bread consumption,” he added.
