Aqaba recorded highest temperature on earth Friday — WMO

AMMAN — Aqaba recorded the highest temperature in the world on Friday, registering 44.6°C, according to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), which collects temperature data from countries’ meteorological stations.

The temperature recorded surpassed those in Gulf countries as well as countries in the southern hemisphere, where summer is about to start.

On September 4, temperatures in the port city of Aqaba, located some 330 kilometres south of the capital, reached a peak of 48.2°C, registering the second-highest temperature globally at the time.

Osama Tarifi, operations director at ArabiaWeather, At the time, said: “The temperatures registered on Friday noon in the Kingdom are the highest in September in all climate records.”

As for October, the temperature recorded is also the highest in the city’s climate records for the month.

On Friday, a hot air mass began impacting the Kingdom, increasing temperatures by around five degrees above their annual average.

The same heat wave has also caused wildfires in Syrian and Palestinian lands, due to the hot weather and dry wind.

The temperatures in Amman are forecast to reach a high of 32°C during the day and a low of 18°C at night on Sunday, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD).

On Monday, temperatures in the capital are forecast to range between 32°C and 19°C, dropping slightly on Tuesday to range between 31°C and 17°C.

In Aqaba, temperatures on Sunday are forecast to range between 39°C and 24°C, 39°C and 25°C on Monday, and 38°C and 23°C on Tuesday, according to the JMD.
