FM speaks at Arab League meeting on Libya, Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Tuesday participated in an emergency ministerial meeting of the Arab League, which was requested by Egypt to discuss the latest developments in Libya and the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. 

Speaking during the videoconference, Safadi said that the meeting was held with Arab consensus to reach a political solution to the Libyan crisis that preserves its unity and stability, noting that the road to such a solution is "only through a Libyan-Libyan dialogue with Arab and international support" based on accredited references and initiatives.

The minister warned against the repercussions of “the regionalisation and internationalisation” of the Libyan crisis on Libya and neighbouring countries, adding: “We all want a political solution that protects Libya and Libyans and prevents further collapse in the country”, according to a ministry statement.

He also welcomed Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita’s proposal to form a micro Arab team to draw a strategic plan for a collective Arab effort to resolve the Libyan crisis, stressing the importance of the Arab role in efforts to reach an end to the crisis.

Participants adopted a resolution on the importance of Libya's unity and sovereignty and the safety of its lands, highlighting the need to exert efforts to help the Libyan state recover its role in serving its citizens.

The meeting also adopted a resolution on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam presented by Egypt and Sudan, and a Jordanian proposal to form an Arab League committee to follow up on the issue at the UN Security Council and work jointly with Cairo and Khartoum to establish an international stance through dialogue to end the dispute. 

Commenting on the resolution, Safadi voiced the Kingdom’s "full support" to Egypt and Sudan on their resolution, which "reflects the unity of the Arab stance and instils steadfastness in Arab positions in adhering to international law".
