AMMAN — Commemorating Nakbeh (catastrophe) each year keeps the Palestinian cause present in the minds of generations and commemorates the tragedies and suffering of a people displaced from their homeland by an occupier, Lower House Speaker and President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (APU) Atef Tarawneh said on Thursday.
In an APU statement issued on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of Nakbeh Day, Tarawneh called for supporting Palestinians in all international forums to confront the so-called “Deal of the Century” and Israeli plans aimed at expanding settlements, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Tarawneh renewed calls for the international community and the UN Security Council to form a neutral committee to follow up on the health conditions of prisoners and detainees in Israeli prisons.
On the occasion, Tarawneh received a message from the President of the Palestinian National Council (PNC) Salim Zanoun, which highlighted that the anniversary of Nakbeh Day coincides with the occupation’s measures to annex large parts of occupied Palestinian land.
Zanoun said that “Israeli measures have come as far as threatening to close Palestinian banks, arrest their CEOs and seize their funds for providing services to the families of prisoners, the wounded and Palestinian martyrs”.
Zanoun stressed the PNC’s affirmation of the rights of refugees displaced in 1948 to return and compensation, as well as an end of the occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
