AMMAN — Minister of State for Media Affairs Amjad Adaileh on Sunday extended greetings to Jordanian journalists on World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3.
In a statement to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the minister highlighted the “keenness of the Jordanian political will”, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, to enhance press freedoms, one of the “key pillars of societies’ progress and prosperity”.
This year, World Press Freedom Day is marked during an exceptional global health crisis whose repercussions have affected all sectors, including the media industry, he said, underscoring the vital role of media amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Adaileh commended the efforts of Jordanian media organisations and media professionals who have been committed to a national approach and free media, which have contributed in improving Jordan’s position on the World Press Freedom Index 2020 by two places.
The minister highlighted the importance of building on this advancement to achieve more improvement in media and press freedom through enhancing media legislation, particularly laws related to access to information and transparency.
“We believe that media is a key partner for decision and policy makers; we are working intensively to enhance its freedom and to provide media-empowerment tools,” Adaileh said.
