AMMAN — Police on Thursday said they arrested two men who reportedly robbed an establishment in downtown Amman at gunpoint earlier in the day.

The two suspects, wearing masks to cover their faces, entered an establishment in the downtown area and “one of them drew a gun and robbed the place at gunpoint”, Public Security Department Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

“A special team formed to investigate the incident managed to locate the two suspects and stormed the house they were in and retrieved all of stolen cash,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Various media outlets reported that the suspects allegedly stole Jordanian and US currency estimated in the thousands.

However, Sartawi refused to disclose the amount that was stolen, or which establishment was robbed, when contacted by The Jordan Times.

Three banks were targeted earlier this year and all three suspects were arrested shortly after the robberies.

In 2018, a money exchange shop and eight banks were targeted in Jordan, with some cases involving armed robbers, while other robbers used fake weapons.

Seven of the nine robbers have been arrested so far, while two suspects, who escaped with over JD105,000 in cash from two banks in the Wihdat neighbourhood and in Irbid, remain at large.
